A Choice Blend - What Volunteers Want from Organization and Management

Commissioned by the Institute for Volunteering Research for the England Volunteering Forum, this report examines how organizations can maximize their chances of retaining volunteers by studying how and why volunteers become involved.

Through focus groups and interviews with volunteers, researchers theorize that volunteer involvement happens in four stages that demonstrate the progression of a non-volunteer becoming a long-term volunteer.

Within the four stages are eight factors (“pressure points”) that can influence a person’s decision to stay as a volunteer. Ranging from the image and appeal of volunteering to the culture of the organization, the report provides insight on how organizations can strengthen or improve their volunteer management program to help support and retain volunteers.
