The Evolving Role of a Volunteer Resources Specialist

There has been an increasing need over the past few years for a stronger volunteer infrastructure to be implemented within volunteer organizations. The current day and age necessitates that charitable organizations adopt a more business-like approach and restructure in order to utilize their volunteers’ skills and abilities effectively.

As a result, many volunteer organizations are creating a diverse number of positions. One example is the Canadian Cancer Society - Alberta/NWT Division, where Kelly Blitz is the volunteer resource specialist. Within her department, each of the nine units are assigned a volunteer resource personnel, and as Ms. Blitz remarks, “they are the ones that manage the volunteers directly and I am the one that is managing them."
